How does cycle-related water retention occur?

As soon as there is estrogen dominance , the positive effects of estrogen can turn into their opposite. Among other things, the effect of firm, “plump” skin then manifests as uncomfortable and painful edema, i.e., cycle-related water retention, because estrogens have a water-binding effect.

In the case of estrogen dominance, the estrogen level is also too high in relation to progesterone in the second half of the cycle. This probably causes more hormones to be released that are associated with the water balance and increase the permeability of blood vessels to water and protein.

Hormonally caused water retention occurs exclusively in the second phase of the cycle between ovulation and menstruation. The extent varies from person to person. In some menstruating people, the fingers and feet swell, in others the breasts or legs feel tight, while others suffer from severe swelling in the face or abdomen.

The edema disappear on their own again with the onset of menstruation. But until then they can be painful and uncomfortable.

What helps quickly against water retention?

If you suffer from estrogen dominance, you can support your hormone balance from within. The regulation takes a few cycles. Until then, you can follow some tips against water retention.

1. Drink plenty

Even though it sounds paradoxical, a good preventive measure is to drink plenty and support kidney function. If it is certain that the edema are not symptoms of cardiovascular or kidney diseases, teas made from diuretic herbs such as nettle, horsetail, or birch leaves are particularly recommended.

2. Water- and potassium-rich fruit and vegetables

Foods with a high water and/or potassium content support kidney function. Therefore, cucumber, watermelon, asparagus, pineapple, apricot, banana, or kiwi are recommended.

3. Avoid certain foods and beverages

You should avoid salty foods due to their high sodium content. You are also not advised to consume alcohol and caffeine.

4. Cooling

If swelling is already present, cooling helps. Kneipp baths, cold showers, cold compresses, or cooling gels can provide relief. It is particularly gentle on the circulation to start the cold water application on the body part furthest from the heart (the outer edge of the right foot) and then work gradually towards the heart.

5. Promote circulation

Elevating the feet increases fluid drainage from the legs, just like light endurance exercise. Muscle movements act like a pump on the veins and support fluid transport. If you have the opportunity, you can also treat yourself to lymphatic drainage or a foot reflexology massage.

6. Have the cause clarified

Important: it should be made clear where the water retention is coming from. It can be hormonally caused, but it can also be a symptom of heart disease, blood vessel disease, or diabetes, which must be treated. Diuretic teas would be rather harmful in this case!
